Haha, no. The Matoba clan is the largest and most powerful exorcist clan in the region. The Natori clan is a clan of one. We're on very different scales.
The Matoba clan serve as a sort of organizing force for the exorcist community in the area. They host spellcaster meetings, organize bounties for dangerous ayakashi, etc. I've taken some jobs from them when it's something I'm suited for, things that are too small to justify deploying the full might of the Matoba clan. So in that sense, we have the same broad goals of protecting people.
I'm grateful to have access to Matoba-san's expertise. I said earlier that resolving this situation is not easy. That's true even if all of the exorcists and other spellcasters here work together, but we're certainly in a better spot with him here.
It will make exorcist assemblies back home rather more awkward, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
[it doesn't escape Edamura's notice how carefully Natori manages to avoid allowing personal feelings to seep into his answers. then again, maybe he has none? maybe they really are just distant coworkers. at any rate, that part of things is not his business. he will politely refrain from pressing]
Huh. Sounds like you respect him quite a bit. And hopefully it won't be THAT awkward.
[That's right... They're just distant coworkers... They've certainly never been on a first name basis. Just two professional colleagues who are extremely normal.]
Haha, it's no problem. Unfortunately it wouldn't be hard for the exorcist community to believe that we were spirited away to an ayakashi love hotel. I'm not very popular among most exorcists, so it would be more of a problem for me than for Matoba-san.
That's kind of you to say! But most exorcists are... less than pleased that I spend time filming romance movies instead of doing exorcism as a full time career.
[Especially certain exorcists who are here in the hotel.]
[Which Natori can say confidently, because he's just down the hall. The knock on the door comes quickly after his last text, and when it opens Natori beams a smile worthy of a meet and greet with a fan. He also holds up a few paper talismans with esoteric writing.]
[it doesn't take long for Edamura to answer the door, flinging it open with the same amount of exuberance a fan may have. because he is one!!]
Huh. . .! Somehow, I thought "it won't be long" would still be at least ten minutes or so.
[he steps aside, gesturing into his humble abode, which is still quite sparsely decorated. though he now has a simple glass pour over coffee maker and old fashioned bean grinder sitting on top of his dresser]
Haha, that's right. I've got a Three of Spades. [And so Edamura is a Three of Clubs, then. Good to know, though it's not like Natori particularly cares about collecting different cards.] Sorry for intruding.
[He instinctively steps out of his shoes just inside the door, putting one hand on the dresser for support. Once he straightens up, he nods at the humble coffee accessories.] You must really like coffee, huh?
[There had been some in that house too. At the time he'd just thought it was another trapping of suburbia, but maybe it was pulled in by Edamura's subconscious the same way he'd kept finding exorcist scrolls in each of his houses.] ...Is that why she called you 'bean'?
[good! removing one's shoes is the polite thing to do!! bringing up "Uncle Bean," however. . .]
Gck—
[Edamura immediately freezes up, like a deer caught in headlights. stopped literally on his way to fetch said coffee implements so he can make Natori a nice, warm mug. an offering of gratitude for the talismans and autograph? or just good hospitality?]
That's— khhhh, probably not. [he knows very well why Mitsuru-chan had called him "Uncle Bean." he just refuses to share it] But I like your reasoning better, so let's go with it.
[Just checking the lay of the land here! He didn't say Edamura was a bean!!! But this is clearly another personal thing pulled in by the house, like Mitsuru's name was for him. Well, Natori doesn't want to start throwing stones, and it's probably just an affectionate nickname that reminds him of home. Edamura probably wouldn't appreciate an official exorcist lecture on how he shouldn't let his guard down when he encounters these little pinpricks-- that they are, in fact, designed to get him to let his guard down-- but at least Natori can provide some synthetic guard support.
He wiggles the small stack of talismans between his fingers to draw attention to them. They look similar to the ofuda that would be found in any shrine, except that the characters written on them (in extremely nice calligraphy) are gibberish.]
Well, in any case. I'll put these up around your room. They should stop most low-level ayakashi from getting in, so you don't have to worry about anything coming up from the maintenance floors. Just leave them where I put them, okay? If you want to hang up pictures or something, give me a call so I can shift them.
[truthfully, he doesn't hate it as much as his bluster suggests. it's used as a term of endearment by some of his favorite people, and so it has more meaning to him than he'd care to admit. but Natori doesn't need to know that!!]
[Edamura digs around underneath his bed for a bottle of water, which he then uses to fill up his electric kettle. time to get that boiling so it can be ready when he finishes grinding the beans]
That sounds good to me, though. I won't touch them while they're in place. [easiest instructions in the world to follow] . . . do you have any hung up in your room?
[You'd think they'd be easy instructions to follow, but he's had to clean up one too many headaches caused by someone moving one of his wards!! With a practiced eye, Natori starts placing the talismans, tacking one to the wall and then scanning the faint lines of protection he could see emerging from it to the next key point. He laughs good-naturedly.]
I haven't slept without a ward in place since high school. Before then, probably, since there was still some protection in place before I started working. [The Natori clan being out of business before he took over, and all that.] --Well, barring when the hotel drags us somewhere else. These aren't going to be able to stop that, they're just to stop the small fries from wandering around.
[the kettle lid snaps shut, and Edamura reaches for a bag of coffee beans next. some simple Brazilian Santos for a simple, smooth cup! though. . . he pauses in the middle of pouring them into his grinder, allowing a beat of silence to stretch between them as he considers Natori's warning]
. . . they aren't going to stop the suits either, are they?
[a dumb question. he already knows the answer. if Natori knew how to stop the suits from preying upon them, he likely would have done it months ago. and yet. . .]
[Edamura still lowers a hand to his hip, where the (now dormant) Clubs mars his skin]

But if it's not that, then what were you going to ask?
no subject
I wanted to ask you about Matoba-san. You guys know each other, right?
no subject
That's right. We both operate out of Kyushu.
[They're country boys...]
Though I don't mean to imply that the Natori clan is on the same footing as the Matoba clan.
no subject
He did mention something about your clan being out of business for a long time before you took it over. Are you guys rivals?
no subject
no subject
Do you work together, then? Like comrades?
no subject
no subject
Huh. . . that makes sense. So you kind of are like associates, even though you work independently.
[a pause. this is a more personal question, but. . .]
Do you like having someone you know from back home around?
[if anyone from Team Confidence showed up here, Edamura would have a fit]

Sorry for prying! I was just curious.

Not very popular? But why? You're so nice and personable!

[Especially certain exorcists who are here in the hotel.]

Sounds awfully judgmental of them. You should do what makes you happy. Though it sounds like you don't need me to tell you that.
no subject
In any case, I did promise you some charms. I can come drop them off if it's convenient for you. (And the autograph.)
no subject
Yeah, of course! I'm just hanging out in my room right now. I'm rank three, so it's in the basement.
no subject
[Which Natori can say confidently, because he's just down the hall. The knock on the door comes quickly after his last text, and when it opens Natori beams a smile worthy of a meet and greet with a fan. He also holds up a few paper talismans with esoteric writing.]
Told you.

[he steps aside, gesturing into his humble abode, which is still quite sparsely decorated. though he now has a simple glass pour over coffee maker and old fashioned bean grinder sitting on top of his dresser]
You must live on the same floor.
[he got Natori's suit, but never his rank]
