Ah, got it. So it's a word for that type of ayakashi.

[Thankfully "ayakashi" is such a huge category that he'll never have to reconsider his world view!]

If that's the case, it sounds like our abilities should be pretty compatible. Do you know if you're able to sense the presence of the thing we're not supposed to talk about? I felt it a few days before the flood, and since then I've been able to pick it out if someone's infected with it.

I have, yes. It's not a pleasant feeling. I wish there was some way to get to the center of it and- seal it away, or cleanse it from the island.

Disgusting, right? Even without physical contact, you can just tell it's nasty.

I wonder about that, though. So far I've only come across it either when someone was already infected or when it briefly tried to get to me-- and it's not like I could feel it coming ahead of time or follow my way back to its source. But it must be powerful if it's able to reach out to so many people at the same time. It makes me wonder if it's not based in this plane at all-- if there's another overlapping 'path' with this one, and it's based over there instead of here. It could be why we can't track down the source of it.

Or it could just be powerful enough to suppress its own presence.

Given the lack of boundary between Life and Death here, it's certainly possible. Perhaps it's located further into Death? Or it's hiding somewhere on the island.

I don't know enough about death in that way-- it's not something I deal with. But I can tell you that if it was physically on the island that we're inhabiting, we'd have located it by now. It's too strong and the island is too small with too many people looking for it. I've heard some theories that we only have access to part of the island, though-- it could easily be hiding in the rest. Or under it.
