99% self-directed once an initiate learns all the basics from a mentor. most people you run into afterwards are around the same level, but running into a real master of the art is

Interesting... I'm used to apprentices working with their mentors for basically the rest of their careers. If anything, they'd want you to pick up the basics on your own instead of wasting their time teaching stuff that could come from a book.
